The Callisto Protocol team Striking Distance Studios has been queried on its plans for post-launch support and the possibility of DLC, with the developer responding that it's planning four years' worth. That's a lot for a single player only game — only titles like Dying Light have achieved such a feat — but the team's reply to any expansions is causing some confusion. It's given the impression its DLC plans are still up in the air with the game three months out. However, it's already selling a season pass.
The comment comes via an interview conducted by True Trophies at Gamescom. CTO Mark James said the following: "We’ve left the world expandable. We’ve created a world that can tell different stories, and so we can either tell those stories either through DLC, or we could actually tell those stories through subsequent products. We’ve left those open."
A perfectly normal comment to make, but expectations change when you're already selling a season pass via pre-orders. On the PS Store, a Digital Deluxe Edition bundles in a season pass for £74.99/$89.99. There are a few bonus packs too, but these are also part of the standard Day One Edition priced at £54.99/$69.99 on PS5. Therefore, the season pass holds a value of £20/$20.
The PS Store listing doesn't detail what you'll get as part of the season pass, but with the game now just three months away, you'd like to think these plans are at least solidified internally. This doesn't appear to be the case at the time of writing. True Trophies suggests some fun DLC ideas during the interview, but never is a concrete answer on what's to be offered shared.
James adds: "We like to think of this as a franchise — every developer when they [make a new] IP, they like to think of it as a franchise investment. It’s really expensive to generate a new IP, so we always want to try and get the most out of it."

What the hell does that even mean? 4 years of support, a season pass and the "possibility of DLC"? Are they telling us that the Season pass could just be filled with cosmetics? Either way I'm not buying a season pass until I know the content of said season pass is good.
I got a bit nervous dlc and dlc...
I already was worried this was going to feel like too short of a game now they saying its going to not really end... because they left the world "expandable"?
Spider-Sense is tingling...
Why do people buy season passes before they know what content is included? Or even if the content is any good? Or even if the actual game is any good?
Season passes used to be good value but recently, they’ve been getting worse and worse. The season pass for AC Valhalla was a bit naff (and then they released another expansion that wasn’t included - you had to pay extra).
I would never pay upfront for a season pass now. There’s no guarantee you’ll get your moneys worth.
Why I have never bought a season pass before hand
Barely ever buy them in general period
@BritneyfR_ee in cases like this, they don't list the season pass separately and scare buyers into thinking the only way to get it is by rebuying the deluxe edition, therefore might as well buy it now.
Me personally: why anyone preorder digital games at all?!
(I know the answer in many cases is similar preorder-only digital knickknacks)
@Tharsman What makes you think its going to be super short?
Because he knows so many people will complain if he reveals they're planning for the DLC. A lot of people just don't understand how management of this sort of project works and think it's sacrilegious to even think about DLC before release day.
Well guess I buy this game in 4-5 years then.
This is incredibly shady. If you aren’t certain about what the season pass will contain, don’t sell it.
"We’ve left the world expandable. We’ve created a world that can tell different stories, and so we can either tell those stories either through DLC, or we could actually tell those stories through subsequent products. We’ve left those open."
seems fine to me
there was dlc for dead space 2 and 3 so why wouldnt they for calisto protocol
I do not see the problem. If they did not list the content, ofc you haven't bought it yet.
If you are too dimwitted to understand a simple concept like that, get yourself a helmet and never speak in public again.
"We’ve left the world expandable."
This can dangerously read as: "We didn't finish the story so buy the DLC or you won't get the whole picture."
I was cautiously optimistic about this game but now they've turned me into a skeptic.
Always scepticle when a dev publishes game footage super early.
I hope I'm wrong, but I feel I might be disappointed in this title.
Don't buy the season pass until things are clearer, I'm interested in this game but I'll be busy with GoW so don't plan on picking it up straight away.
Promising 4 years of support is so silly 🤦♂️ putting unnecessary pressure and expectations on yourself, and if the game doesn't do as well you run the risk of disappointing fans.
Vagueness of the season pass is worrying and the inclusion of one is presumably a requirement from the publisher.
I never buy season passes until all of the content is out, I don't see the point in buying them before they're completed, it's not like there is a shortage of games to play
This is a death sentence for a game for me. All this kind of announcement does is make me think it's another game I don't have to think about until the definitive version is available for £20 secondhand.
How I see this.
We've made a game with a story that is complete.
We've created an interesting world that can be filled with more great stories.
We may use those in DLC, but we may save the BEST new stories for the next game if it's popular enough.
Pretty sure there will be DLC, but they might keep the very best stuff back to expand on for a full franchise.
But also, only buy confirmed stuff. Season passes can be bought post release anyway. You might not even like the game so why commit to 4 years of playing it 😅
All season passes should have to come with a roadmap of content. So that customers know what it is they are buying.
I got burned twice before with Destiny 1 and Halo Wars 2.
This is one of the reasons I wait a year before buying games. Though if this game has four years of "content", I may just wait that out.
I'm not buying something when I don't know what I get with my money.
People shouldn’t buy the season pass. I don’t understand why people would if you don’t even know what they’ll make. There is 0 reason to get it before the dlc is announced beyond being someone who is taken over by hype.
There is literally nothing wrong with his statement. Absolutely nothing. Gamers are overly pessimistic as usual.
As for the Season Pass, there is no reason to buy it.
I'm going to buy the standard edition & then get the season pass when the contents out if it's any good
nothing like the Internet to over react.
its digital. doesnt need ordering. wait for a review etc
so theres going to be dlc and maybe another game
whats the outrage about?
So just buy the Base game then,Right.. Good to know
How nerd can people get? Imagine going around being whiny over something like this. lol
Thats cool.more single player season pass for the callisto protocol is fine by me.word up son
Geez. So this is what I get for trusting some of the people who made the OG Dead Space and putting my $$ behind them by pre-ordering the season pass w the game🤦🏽 After 13 straight years of gaming you think I’d know better, but, well, this one’s on me. 😑🙄 I’m sure the game will be awesome from everything I’ve seen, but if I get hosed on the DLC, well, that’s my fault this time.
This entire article is grasping. It was clearly stated that “We view this as a full-service title and we will be investing in DLC. We’re looking at four years of support after release”.
Dont pre-order, forget Day One and Digital Deluxe scams and wait for the GOTY or whatever complete edition. Then you'll get the full game, bugs fixed and all content for a reasonable price.
@BeerIsAwesome I heavily suspect this is the reason, could see them wait until launch week before revealing the DLC roadmap.
@StylesT There was once a time when a season pass actually offered great value, particularly with Bethesda games. Those days are long gone though sadly....
@Grimwood The season pass for Fallout 3 and New Vegas were great value.
geez no such thing as making a great game , lets just cut it up and release part as dlc
🤦 i see it now im going in for the £75 one my pocket is gona hit me 😭
yes so looking forward to this game im still waiting on dead space 4 but this will do 😂
@Ravix More stories like a part 2 or 3 never understood the problem DLC fixed because there never was a problem to begin with.
